Businesses usually open with fanfare and close quietly. But when a little Millington plant produced its last wood chip Tuesday for Anheuser-Busch’s famous beechwood brewing, it shut down with both a ceremony and a lament of today’s business world. In front of 25 friends, town officials and business associates, Beechwood Corp. owner Tom Urani held up the last Budweiser he’ll ever drink and said, “After 62 years, here’s to quality, here’s to tradition, here’s to the Beechwood Corporation. This final Bud’s for you.”

They didn’t party in Vegas, gold-plate a bathroom or even go out for a nice meal. Instead, they decided to help an impoverished neighborhood. “Every time I turn on the news, I hear about a bank that took bailout money and used it for bonuses or to party in Vegas,” said Philip Walkey, executive director of Service Over Self (SOS), a faith-based organization that renovates homes in Binghamton. “But there are some people in financial institutions that do great things for the city. I just thought it was a real encouraging story.”
