Online advertising revenues grew by 10.6 percent in 2008 — a statistic that has prompted both positive and negative reactions. Any growth is a plus, of course, but the figure is far less than the 26 percent growth the industry saw in 2007. Despite the slowdown, certain categories of online advertising are still doing well. Today’s mantra: The more targeted the better.

A rising number of California parents are choosing to send their children to kindergarten without routine vaccinations, putting hundreds of elementary schools in the state at risk for outbreaks of childhood diseases eradicated in the U.S. years ago.

When we last checked in with innovation expert Dev Patnaik, CEO of growth-strategy firm Jump Associates, he was chiding us for heralding company innovations–as opposed to innovative companies–on last year’s Fast Company 50. Twelve months later, he’s lobbing the same criticism at our new list. (Bring it on, Dev!)
