The Birds Are Dying: Destroying The World We Live In

In his weekly column author Jim Conrad talks about “the wave of human-caused extinctions we’re experiencing right now is the first to take place since the one that 65 million years ago killed off the dinosaurs and caused nearly half of the main groups of marine animals to go extinct” The world around us that we take for granted is rapidly disappearing.

Waving Goodbye To Democracy Recent articles by Ka…

Waving Goodbye To Democracy

Recent articles by Katherine Yurica and Chris Floyd give a glimpse at what is soon to come for America. While the attention of the public is diverted by hysteria over gay marraiges and terrorists under the bed, the extreme right is quietly laying the groundwork for the transistion of the United States from a constitutional democracy to a fundamentalist Christian theocracy to be led by the man who has been “chosen by God”. The “Constitution Restoration Act of 2004″ has been introduced in Congress by Rep. Robert Aderholt (Alabama), Rep. Michael Pence (Indiana), Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, Sen. Zell Miller (Georgia), Sen. Sam Brownback (Kansas), and Sen. Lindsey Graham (South Carolina) is one of the first steps toward the elimination of democracy and the transformation of the United States into an all Christian nation. With hundreds of millions to spend and the backing of many of the nation’s largest church groups and business interests, they have a good chance at succeeding.

The presidential election of 2004 will be a patriotic and religious orgy. It will not just be a choice between two candidates but perhaps  a referendum on everything America has ever been about. Never before in our history has democracy been hanging by a thread as slim it is today for the battle today is not from some foreign shores but from within. Millions gave their lives for over 200 years to protect the hallowed rights and freedoms which could soon vanish forever. Never before has there been a battle in which the choices are any more clear.

The “Constitution Restoration Act of 2004″ is no joke; it was introduced last month by some of the Bush Regime’s most powerful Congressional sycophants. If enacted, it will effectively transform the American republic into a theocracy, where the arbitrary dictates of a “higher power” — as interpreted by a judge, policeman, bureaucrat or president — can override the rule of law…The Act — drafted by a minion of television evangelist Pat Robertson — is the fruit of decades of work by a group of extremists known broadly as “Dominionists.” Their openly expressed aim is to establish “biblical rule” over every aspect of society — placing “the state, the school, the arts and sciences, law, economics, and every other sphere under Christ the King.”…Again, this is no tiny band of cranks meeting in some basement in Alabama, as recent reports by investigators Karen Yurica and David Neiwert make clear. The Dominionists are bankrolled and directed by deep-pocketed, well-connected business moguls and political operatives who have engineered a takeover of the Republican Party and are now at the heart of the U.S. government…Put this juggernaut at the service of democracy-hating extremists with no legal restraints on their enforcement of “God’s sovereign authority” — plus a proven track record of subverting the law to gain political power — and what would you have? A mullah state? A military theocracy? Or should we just call it “a second term”?

Dominionist leaders in congress made their move; they introduced a bill in both houses called The Constitution Restoration Act of 2004. Among the sponsors of the bill are Rep. Robert Aderholt (Alabama), Rep. Michael Pence (Indiana), Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, Sen. Zell Miller (Georgia), Sen. Sam Brownback (Kansas), and Sen. Lindsey Graham (South Carolina). The House version is H.R. 3799 and the Senate version is S. 2082. The bill limits the U.S. Supreme Court and federal courts to hear cases involving “expressions of religious faith by elected or appointed officials.”

CEOs For Universal Healthcare

As a recent Washington Post business article reported (an article that should have been on the Post’s front page!), manufacturers are quietly embracing the concept of universal healthcare. While the major papers have been virtually MIA on this issue, Kirstin Downey, a Post staff writer, admirably called attention to how rising costs are roiling the debate over healthcare reform. Sen. Kerry and leading Democrats should pay close attention to this trend. It could be a very helpful issue in a close election.
